1.2  Numeration Systems

Objective

Understand the structure of the base ten numeration system by investigating numeration systems with different bases.

Overview

The base ten numeration system represents integer and decimal numbers using ten numerals:  0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. This system is positional; that is, the place value associated with each numeral is determined by the numeral’s position in the number.  Table 1.2 illustrates the concept of place value using the whole number 4,351.
