5.1 Modeling the Meaning of Multiplication

Objective

Use concept models to represent and understand multiplication of fractions.

Overview

As with whole numbers and integers, multiplication may be represented as repeated addition.  This approach works well when one of the factors is a whole number. What about multiplication of two fractions?  This lesson uses the area model to demonstrate the meaning of multiplication of fractions, with multiple representations.
