7.4 Arithmetic and Geometric Series

Objective

Understand arithmetic and geometric series.

Overview

When the terms of an arithmetic sequence are summed, the result is an arithmetic series.  When the terms of a geometric sequence are summed, the result is a geometric series.  For example, the arithmetic sequence 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 is the basis for the arithmetic series 1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5.   If the terms of the geometric sequence  are added, the result is a geometric series, .  This section addresses two types of series: Arithmetic and geometric.  We provide examples with the explanation based on the staircase model and area model.
