Chapter One: Systems of Numeration

1.3  Making Sense of Numeration

Objective

Use base ten blocks to understand our numeration system.

Overview

The previous discussion of the structure of our numeration system assumes that the reader is already familiar with exponential notation.  For college students, this is a relatively safe assumption.  But the same approach is clearly unsuitable for young learners.  Some other explanation is needed that will appeal to and make sense to children.
